Abstract

The National Human Rights Commission of South Korea published the report on Hate Discrimination of Transgenders in 2014 and 2020, which showed a reality of various forms of discrimination against sexual minorities. The online survey included 591 transgenders. Trans-females, trans-males, non-binary-females, and non-binary-males comprised 32.0%, 18.8%, 37.4%, and 11.8%, respectively. Eighty-six percent of respondents did not even try to amend legal gender identity. They were experiencing difficulties in wide variety of daily life such as visiting hospitals, subscribing for insurance, banking, installing telephones, issuing certificates and passports, purchasing a house, and voting. Thirty-four percent did not inform their own family members and only 23% had a support from their family. The report suggested measures to counter the potentially hostile environment for transgenders encompassing education, administration, and campaign through media. Although South Korea is committed to protecting human rights in its various forms, it seems a long road lies ahead for transgenders and sexual minorities.
